Mosak's Meanderings:
The Mystery of the Nocturnal Phone Calls
One year some years ago I was getting little sleep. It seemed people were on a mission to deprive me of sleep. Some of those who phoned were drunk, some threatened suicide, some had other emergencies, and some merely professed to be lonely and isolated. I could not figure out why I had suddenly become so popular until I mentioned it to one of my colleagues at a convention. After commiserating with me, she asked me to look in the Yellow Pages when I returned to Chicago, “because if your name is listed at the top of a column in the phone book, you’ll get little sleep that year.” Whether this is generally true, I don’t know, but when I checked, my name did head a column. Each year when I receive my phone book, I immediately check.
